  • At the beginning of the story, Huck has a difficult time trying to live in a "civilized" society, and painfully learns what this means after living with Miss Watson and the Widow Douglas for a period of time.
  • Rising Action
  • Huck suddenly learns that his father, the town drunk, has returned and wants Huck to live with him in an isolated shack. After being beaten and abused, Huck has enough and escapes from his father on a raft.
  • Climax
  • After drifting down the Mississippi River for a few days, Huck discovers Jim, Miss Watson's runaway slave, and they decide to travel together.
  • Resolution
  • On their journey, Huck and Jim encounter many events and obstacles like the Grangerford/Shepherdson feud and the arrival of the king and the duke. Despite their challenges, the two make it out mostly undamaged.
  • Jim is captured back into slavery and sits in a shack waiting to be rescued again. After a complicated turn of events, Huck runs into Tom Sawyer, and together they bust Jim back out of slavery.
  • After Jim's rescue, he's recaptured after trying to help Tom with a wound but is released when it's revealed that Miss Watson set him free in her will. Huck makes plans to go on another adventure after hearing he might be adopted by Aunt Sally.
