  • Causes of the War of 1812
  • Here. Stop the Americans.
  • Great Lakes & Canada
  • In 1812 James Madison, the new president, asked congress to approve of a war between Britain and the U.S. He wanted war because of several reasons.
  • East Coast
  • Madison wanted to wage war against Britain for many reasons. One cause was because the British kept interfering with U.S. ships shipping the France. The British would impress, or force, american sailors to join the British navy. Another cause was because of the Native Americans. The British encouraged the natives to stop the Americans from expanding and gave them British guns. One native , Tecumesh, organized Native American resistance against the Americans.
  • New Orleans
  • Andrew Jackson and his men after they defeated the British.
  • The fighting in the war of 1812 has been fought mostly by the navy around 1812-1814. Commodore Olive Hazard Perry had taken command of the U.S. navy in lake Eerie. After being defeated after two hours, the British retreated into Canada. General William Henry Harrison defeated them there at the Battle of Thames. The British would no longer be a threat to the Northwest territory.
  • Effects of the War of 1812
  • Americans started to manufacture products that they used to trade for.
  • The British have just defeated the French in 1814 and all of its focus is on defeating the U.S. They set up a blockade down the East Coast then burned down the White House and the President's mansion. Frances Scott Key had been at the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland at around the same time. He wrote the " Star Spangled Banner" while watching them fight. It became our national anthem. The Americans also stopped the British invasion of the fort.
  • The British then tried to attack New Orleans in order to cut of the use of the Mississippi to the Americans. Madison sent Andrew Jackson in 1815. Jackson successfully beat the British with 2,000 British casualties and only 71 American casualties. The treaty of Ghent had already ended the war but the new only got to New Orleans after the American victory.
  • The war had many pros to it. It lead way to new American heroes such as Andrew Jackson, William Harrison, and Commodore Perry. It also weakened the Native american Resistance. Since their was no trading with the British, Americans had to start manufacturing their own products which sparked the start of the Industrial Revolution.
