Storyboard Text

  • James Madison was elected as the fourth president of the United States in 1809. He would later send a request to Congress asking them to declare war on England.
  • James Madison as the President
  • Hello! I'm James Madison, the fourth president of the United States.
  • Impressment and Native American resistance were causes of the War of 1812. When England impressed (kidnapped) our ships and sailors while we were trading, president James Madison asked Congress to approve war with Britain. Meanwhile in the Northwest Territory Tecumseh, a Native American Chief, set up Native Americans in the Northwest Territory to fight with the Americans. He was allied with the British in Canada.
  • Impressment and Native American Resistance
  • I don't like how England is impressing our sailors when we try to trade! I'm going to send a request to Congress asking them to declare war on England!
  • Phase one of the war was fought mostly by the Navy in the Great Lakes and in Canada. A man named Oliver Hazard Perry took control of the U.S. Navy in Lake Eerie. He battled with the British, but his ship sank. That didn't stop Perry though. He rowed to another boat and destroyed the British fleet. Then, British ground forces retreated to Canada and General William Henry Harrison followed them and defeated them in the Battle of Thames. After these battles, the British were no longer a threat in the Northwest.
  • Phase One of the War - Battle in the Great Lakes and Canada
  • Hello there! I'm Oliver Hazard Perry and I took down the British Fleet on Lake Eerie.
  • After the British defeated the French, they began putting all of their efforts into winning the war with the U.S. The British soon bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. This ended up being an American victory. It was then when a man named Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star Spangled Banner," our national anthem.
  • Phase Two of the War - Francis Scott Key and the Bombardment of Fort McHenry
  • Hello! I'm Francis Scott Key and I wrote the "Star Spangled Banner."
  • During phase three of the war, Britain attacked New Orleans to cut off American use of the Mississippi River. As a result, James Madison sent Andrew Jackson to command the American forces. Jackson ended up leading the Americans to a victory.
  • Phase Three of the War - Andrew Jackson as a War Hero and the Battle of New Orleans
  • Go and fight the British Andrew Jackson!
  • After the war, U.S. manufacturing grew. This was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The war lead to the Industrial Revolution because during the war, Americans realized that they needed more economic independence. They also knew they needed more economic independence when the Embargo Act was passed in 1807. It hurt America's economy since they couldn't trade with anyone. Because of this and the war with England, manufacturing began to grow.
  • Effect of the War
  • Because of the Embargo Act and the War of 1812, Americans realized we needed more economic independence.
