In an atom, protons and neutrons are found together in the nucleus. Electrons orbit the nucleus in an atom.
There are over 100 different types of atoms. About 92 of them occur naturally while the remainder are made in labs. New atoms can be made by adding more protons to an atomic nucleus.
The first understandings of the existence of atoms date back to ancient Greece and it was Democritus, a Greece philosopher, who first used the term "atom".
