Emmett Ashford grew up with a father who left him. This didn't bother him, leading him to some educational success, excelling at Jefferson High School. He did well in school, and his first job working at the post office. Soon after, he started umpiring.
People had different views about African Americans back then but Emmett Ashford was one of the many blacks to step up and accomplish things. Ashford was the first African-American umpire in the major leagues.
Ashford was known for his enthusiastic ability to umpire. He was the first African American umpire in the the major leagues, and he sure was proud being so. He loved being on the fields with the lights shining down. Ashford is an umpire that umpires look up to.
