The other night horatio, bernardo, and marcellus see the ghost of the now deceased king. They tell Hamlet they saw his father in the gear that he wore for battle. Hamlet decides he will join the night watch, in hopes he will see the apparition.
Lord Polonius tells his daughter, Ophelia to stay away from Hamlet. She agrees, thus leaving Hamlet truly by himself. This drives him even further to the edge, since he can't really trust anyone anymore.
The ghost of Hamlet's father appears once again, and beckons young Hamlet. Hamlet decides to follow, but the others protest. Eventually, Hamlet demands they let him go. Later on in scene V, the ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by his brother Claudius, who now holds the throne.
