  • "Although she lived in the same dirt and trouble with us, nothing ever bothered her." Pg. 4
  • "You've got to do it! You've got to do it!" I keep talking to myself as I dug my hand into the ashes. "I'm not a thief. I'm not a thief. It's only dirt to them. And it's fire to us. Let them laugh at me." And I did not return home until my pail was full of coal. Pg. 8

  • "I am sick of saving and slaving to choke myself in the dirt. I want to live while I'm yet alive." Pg. 39
  • Mashah was the peace keeper. She never let things bother her considering she was living in poverty. She kept herself classy -if you want to call it that- one look at her and you would never know she was living in a house full of other people. She worked when she had to but when she got home she focused on her looks.

  • Bessie had finally snapped at everyone. She is tired of always having to work and feeling like they aren't getting anywhere in life. In a sense she wants to be independent and to go on living her life happy and not having to work as hard as she is now.

  • While beginning the clean Sara's landlady informed her last minute that she never cleaned the windows since she got the place. While cleaning Sara is contemplating how she wants to clean them. Does she open the windows and clean the mess that comes along with it or does she just leave them?
  • Sara is trying to plan out how she can make it by with just five dollars and what specifically does she use it for. She writes everything down and begins to become no aware of how hard life is at the moment.
  • Sara is now home with her father and is continue=ing to adjust to taking care of him.
