In the beginning Johnny states that he is the "man of the house". His father died in the civil war while in combat, now he must take care of his two sisters and mother.
Johnny must go to find wood for the family. After a tiering day Johnny goes to get a drink from the stream that he crossed to go into Tennessee, when soldiers came and captured him.
Johnny stays on his wagon and goes to the outpost with the soldiers. He uses his wagon to gather wood for the soldiers.
After reaching the outpost, Johnny must go to find wood for the whole army.
After waking up startled Johnny finds out that they are being shot at by cannons.
Johnny was sent to prison and stayed there for a long time.
