Storyboard Text

  • "I'm simply defending a Negro..if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature.."
  • "You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down."
  • "You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down."
  • "Scout's a cow-ward!"
  • "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
  • ???
  • After an encounter at school, Scout questions if Atticus defends Negroes. In reply, he explains how he must defend Tom Robinson. It exemplifies an important lesson for Scout's development. It shows how you should follow your own moral code, regardless of what others believe and stick to your own opinion.
  • The next day, she encounters Cecil Jacobs who made a comment about Atticus the other day. She was about to start a fight when she remembered Atticus's words. The lesson developed Scout's character and allowed her to act with her brain instead of her fists, allowing her to be more aware and calm, which will help her to handle the scenario in the right way.
  • After christmas, Scout and Jem receive air rifles. When Scout asks Atticus if she can shoot, he replies that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. The quote is an important lesson and law of life. It gives Scout a mirror-image of the good people in society and how they should really be treated. Although Scout may not understand yet, she will in the future. Atticus's actions will allow Scout to be a mockingbird.
  • After Atticus killed the mad dog, the children learned an important lesson. Before they were revealed his talent, they thought Atticus was very old and boring. They learned not to assume someone can't do something just because you have not seen it yet. They have learned not to prejudge and make false assumptions based on appearance.
