  • The American Railroad Union (ARU) founded by Eugene V. Debs. Refused to allow Pullman's trains to pass unless it contained mail.
  • Strikers are fired..
  • Switchmen were fired because they refused to move Pullman cars. Crowds of people who supported the strike began stopping trains.
  • Olney obtained an injunction from a federal court saying that the strike was illegal.  The president then sent the federal troops to intervene.
  • Debs was arrested for interfering with U.S. mail. Most railroad workers resumed their old jobs and received the same wages as before. Some workers were put on a blacklist, meaning that no railroad in the United States was allowed to hire them. The union Debs had created no longer existed when he got out of jail.
