Storyboard Text

  • Do you know how to solve systems of equations by substitution?
  • Yes what you do is you have two equations and you see which one has a variable and plug it in the the other equation you are using.
  • Do you have any examples of it?
  • Yes, an example is y=-3x+6 and -x=2
  • Now we have to do the first step of trying to solve it.
  • The first step is to replace one variable in the other equation so there is only X or Y.  So y=-3x+6 and -x-2 would be -3x+6-x=2
  • So that means that the second step is to solve for the variable, right?
  • Correct! So -3x+6-x=2  2x+6=2 -6=-6 2x=-4 2x/2=-4/2 x=-2
  • Can you help me figure out the final step for solving systems by using substitution.
  • Sure, you ask yourself how you use it to find y. And that would look something like this y=-3(-2)+6 y=6+6 y=12
  • Now all we have to do now is put the solutions into an equation.
  • Yes and the equation would be (-2, 12)
