  • -After the first draw, Bill Hutchinson's family now had to draw their own slips of paper out of the black box, in order for the final "winner" to be drawn. - During the time that the papers were being put into the box, Tessie would plead with everyone to start over and that the process was not fair. Tessie even wanted to have her married daughter draw with them. Bill however, did not seem to be disturbed during this time, although Tessie was very worried. -Before the second draw began, Tessie was still trying to convince the villagers that it wasn't fair. However, the villagers, including the Hutchinson family, took no heed to what Tessie was going on about. -Each of the five Hutchinson family members drew out a slip of paper, and much to Tessie's dismay, she ended up getting the paper with the black dot. {"It's Tessie," Mr.Summers said. and his voice was hushed. "Show us her paper Bill."} - Page 4 -
  • Once it was verified that Tessie was the "winner", the villagers began to go and gather rocks and pebbles. The villagers, despite Tessie's pleas and protests, continued to make their way towards her with their rocks, aiming to stone her to death. {Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. "It isn't fair," she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head.} - Page 4 - {"It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and they were upon her.} - Page 4 -
