"Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella."
Mrs. Mallard's sister comforting her after telling her that her husband had died. Her husbands friend Richard stands nearby.
"When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease—of joy that kills."
When her husband dies, she feels free from his restraints and now can live her own life. She is upset by his death but a great joy overcomes her.
Brently Mallard had been far from the scene of the accident and did not even know there had been one. This is a huge surprise to everyone in the house. It is too much for Mrs. Mallard to handle.
Mrs. Mallard drops dead and never has to be under her husbands control again. They all witness this terrible event.
