Storyboard Text

  • Initial Dialogue or Event...
  • "She chewed up a toothbrush pill, punched her pillows, and shoved an old portable heater-one that produced about as much heat as a sleeping, Tally sized human being-under the covers. Then she crawled out the window"(4).
  • Propelling The Action...
  • "she had promised Peris that she wouldn't get caught. And the jacket was for emergencies, and there was a green light on.... 'Heads up!' Tally shouted. And jumped" (22).
  • Outcome...
  • "Tally cleared her throat. A small, pathetic sound. 'I'm sorry,' she said" (27).
  • The figure let out a sigh. 'Oh, phew. Hey, that's okay. I must have scared you, too.'" (28).
  • Tally keeps looking out of her window at night, seeing New Pretty Town, and waiting desperately until it's her turn to turn pretty. She can't wait anymore, and decides to sneak into the town to see her friend Peris.
  • Initial Dialogue or Event...
  • "'Not be pretty? That's crazy, Shay. All the times you talked that way, I thought you were just being stupid'" (90).
  • "'Going to where David lives' 'It's not like here, Tally'... 'And... you never have to get the operation'" (89).
  • When Tally gets into New Pretty Town and the party that Peris is in, things go a little wrong when Tally shows up to what is supposed to be a white tie party in a mask, trying to hide her "ugly" face. to avoid getting caught, Tally must escape by jumping off of the roof in a bungee jacket.
  • Propelling The Action...
  • "'Until you do help us, to the very best of your ability, you will never be pretty' Dr. Cable turned away. 'You can die ugly, for all I care'" (110).
  • Tally escapes to the river where she sees a figure which she thinks is the warden, trying to catch her, but is really her new best friend Shay, who will eventually end up jeopardizing Tally's chances of becoming pretty. If Tally never chose to go see Peris, she would have never needed to escape to the river where she met Shay.
  • Outcome...
  • "'You might just make it .' ...'The trip. To the Smoke'" (132).
  • Shay sneaks to Tally's house at night, and asks her if she will go with her to the Smoke, where David lives, away from the city. Tally says no, and tries to persuade Shay to stay, saying that they can turn pretty together, but when Shay says that she's going anyway, Tally promises to keep the details of Shay's leaving a secret.
  • The morning of Tally's operation, she is brought to the operation, room, but she never gets the operation, instead she is taken to Special Circumstances, where they tell Tally that unless she helps them find Shay, she'll never be pretty. Tally decides to help them find Shay, because she made a promise with Peris first that they would be pretty together.
  • If Tally had left with Shay, and avoided undergoing the operation, she wouldn't be in this position. But because she stayed behind, she is being forced to help Special Circumstances find Shay, and make the trip to the Smoke herself, to find Shay and the others and then return home to become pretty like she always wanted.
  • "But I already told you everything you wanted to know. I gave you the note. You promised!'" (132).
