In the country Jack is known as Jack. The country is where all of Jack's responsibilities are.
In the city, Jack is known as Earnest. He uses this false identity to impress Gwendolen and escape his responsibilities.
Gwendolen and Cecily think they are in love with the same person but really they were two different people. It was Algernon and Jack using their false identities.
Gwendolan finds out that Jack has been lying about his name all along.
In the end of the play they find out that Jack's real name is actually Earnest.
