Storyboard Text

  • Theban Rebellion
  • I will not abandon control of Greece!
  • You must give up control of Greece.
  • MARCH!!
  • Amnesty
  • WE WILL NOT SURRENDER!! All those that wish to set Greece free may join us.
  • Just give us Pheonix and Prothytes and everyone else will remain unharmed.
  • Alexander was in Illyria when he learnt that Thebes had repelled. His generals believed that the should abandon Greece as their army would never make it in time but he would not.
  • Theban Treason
  • Alexander marched his army 250 miles in 13 days from Illyria to Thebes. The speed of this march surprised the Greeks, deprived Thebes of reinforcements and minimized the unrest to a single city.
  • The Siege
  • Alexander didn't want to destroy Thebes as it would prove he was a tyrant in the eyes of the Greeks. Alexander wanted the Greeks to support his invasion of Persia so he offered lenient terms to end the conflict diplomatically but Thebes refused.
  • League of Corinth
  • Yes and I could use some more slaves.
  • We should raze the city! They betrayed us to the Persians.
  • The lenient terms showed the Greeks that Alexander was reasonable and could show mercy. The rejection of these terms is clear proof that Thebes had violated the 'common peace' and committed treason. Alexander still did not attack, as he gave them 3 days amnesty, even though they insulted him, which shows he keeps to his word.
  • Alexander was 'ever-present in the field' during the siege and showed his military skill. He had to lay siege to a walled city with a well trained army and did so skilfully. 6000 Thebans were killed.
  • Alexander was in a delicate situation after he took the city as he need to send a strong message to the Greeks but did not wish to be blamed for Thebe's destruction. He let the League of Corinth vote on what to do with Thebe's as he knew they would take vengeance for what happened in the Persian war.
