The First Job
Esperanza is at a party. She notices how her feet are "growing bigger and bigger" (Cisneros 47). This explains that she is growing. This is a hyperbole because she is exaggerating her growth. It relates to the theme (Growth and Maturity) because she is growing and going through puberty.
Esperanza is jumping rope with her friends. They are singing a song that explains that without hips you will turn into a man. "I don't care what kind I get. Just as long as I get hips" (Cisneros 51). This explains that they want hips badly. This is an assonance because of it rhyming. This relates to the theme because she is talking about going through puberty.
Esperanza has to get job. She has to seem and act one year older. "So the next morning I put on my navy blue dress that made me look older [...]" (Cisneros 54). This is an example of imagery because it makes you think of what the dress looks like. This is related to the theme because she has to grow up fast.
