  • John feels ashamed of his affair with Abigail, so he tries to bury it and act like it never happened. His guilt leads to great tension with Elizabeth because he tells her his feelings, accusing her of being judgmental and dwelling on his mistakes.
  • Guilt
  • Tituba starts naming people who might be witches and blames Abby while Abby is right next to her. Then, Abby figures in order to get out of trouble she should start naming names. By the end of the act, all of the girl who caught on started hysterically crying out names so they would not get in trouble.
  • Hysteria
  • Reverend Parris said that there is no unnatural causes for his daughter Betty's illness. He is scared that if people find out that she was practicing witchcraft, the towns people will think of him differently because his daughter was dancing with the devil under his roof.
  • Reputation
  • Reverend Parris begins to realize everything that has been going on and how it is all a lie. So instead of accusing people of trying to overthrow the court like in Andover, He begins to feel bad for those who were and are accused.
  • The girls turn on Mary Warren in Act Three, pretending she is a little bird coming to tear their eyes out. Abigail leads this act and all of the other girls were following what Abigail was doing. It was so intense that the court did not know what to do.
  • John Proctor refused to sign a false confession that he was practicing witchcraft, but he doesn't want to ruin his name and He would rather die then ruin his name and his reputation.
