Storyboard Text

  • The Compromise of 1850
  • I am so glad the war with Mexico is over.
  • I agree, but now what are the people like us going to do in California?
  • We always could apply to be a free state in the United States.
  • Meanwhile in the Nation's capitol...
  • We most certainly should not! It would upset the balance between the North and the South! We need the same number of slave states as there are that of the free!
  • You know I really think we should admit California to the Union as a free state.
  • Fine. Deal.
  • Alright, I will make you a deal. Let California in as free state, and we will use the idea of popular sovereignty in the other new territory from Mexico. Deal?
  • Somewhere in the Mexican Territory
  • Yay for popular sovereignty allowing this to happen!
  • Attention! Attention! The votes are in and our territory is officially legalizing slavery.
  • The compromise was an agreement between the Northern and Southern states over slavery in the New territory. In return for California being a free state, the fugitive slave law was passed because the South wanted stricter regulations on slaves.
