A rural schoolhouse
The most important thing that happened at school, even more important than softball, was who would get to carry the water.
Alma Niles, put up her hand and said, “why can’t girls go for the water, too?”
Instead of just standing back and watching Alma get beaten up, as we usually did when the boys were after someone, the girls rushed right in to try and help her.
The first thing, clearly evident by recess Monday morning, was that the boys had decided not to let us girls field at softball
Miss Ralston grabbed the bat, squinting against the sun, was twirling and linning before our astonished eyes
Next week Alma and Joyce will go for the water
Schools in, she announced over her shoulder, walking away.Hitting the ball into the ox pasture happened maybe once a year
