They now had most of the rights of a regular citizen.
July 9, 1869, the 14th amendment was passed. This amendment grants all african american males citizenship.
Abraham Lincoln passes this amendment after the Civil War. He started reconsturuction but died before he could see it through.
This made all former slaves now citizens, and they now had equal protection under the law.
Many Southerners were very angry about the change. They started revolting, but federal troops kept them in order.
That is why the 14th amendment is the most important amendment, because without it, all African Americans would not have the sam rights as all american citizens.
