  • The final flashpoint for German nationalism was the brief but gloriously successful Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871. Otto Von Bismark negotiated and formulated the long-awaited unification of Germany.
  • The Naval Race 1906-1914
  • Britain will always have the greatest naval power!
  • The Triple Alliance contained three countries which were Germany. Austria-Hungary, and Italy. It was formed in 1882. However, Austria-Hungary was allied with Germany in 1879. The Triple Entente contained Russia, France, and Britain. Russia and France were allied in 1894.
  • The Balkan Wars

  • Otto Von Bismark had arranged an agreement with Russia and Germany in 1887 to remain neutral if the other became involved in a war with a third power ( Austria-Hungary, France).
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria
  • Everyone assumed naval power equaled domination. Britain had the leading naval force in the world at the time. However, Germany wanted to compete with Britain and conquer the seas. Furthermore, Britain was challenged by this move and launched a powerful ship called the Dreadnought in 1906.
  • ZZWHAT?! FOR GERMANY!
  • The Balkan League - Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Montenegro, attacked the Ottoman Empire in 1914. The attacks deprived almost all of their territory in Europe.

  • On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Gavrilo Princip a Serbian. This assassination sparked many people and was the final major event that led to The Great War.
