In the vignette My Name Esperanza describes her name as "like the number nine" (Cisneros 10). She describes it as the number nine because it is odd and has too many letters in it.
In the vignette Hairs, Esperanza mentions that her hair is ugly and she doesn't want it. She says that her mother's hair smells "like bread right after you bake it." (Cisneros 7).
