  • Della and Jim are husband and wife, and they are not very well financially.  It is Christmas Eve, and they are both trying to find a present for each other with the little money they have. Della has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy Jim's present.

  • The conflict in this story is that Della does not have enough money to buy Jim's present so she has to cut off and sell her hair.
  • Falling Action
  • The rising action in the story is when Jim is about to walk in the door of their apartment.
  • Resolution
  • The climax in this story is when Jim walks through the door and sees Della's hair and also when Jim and Della figure out that their presents to each other were no longer useful.
  • The falling action in this story was when Della and Jim realize the irony in their situation and decide to put their gifts away until they would be useful.
  • The resolution in this story is when the author references the magi and relates this story to them.
