•A pioneering African-American poet, Phillis Wheatley was born in Senegal/Gambia around 1753. At the age of 8, she was kidnapped and brought to Boston on a slave ship. Upon her arrival, John Wheatley purchased the young girl, who was in fragile health, as a servant for his wife, Susanna
After Phillis Wheatly was brought to the Wheatly's home they educated her and that was when she mastered latin and greek she soon went to write highly acclaimed poetry.
She got her poems publish in the Newport Mercury at the age of 13. When more of her poems where published her fame was increesed. She was free from slavery and traveled to London to promote her poetry to medical treatment for health.
