McCarthyism vs. The Crucible

Storyboard Text

  • Parallel
  • THEME
  • The Crucible
  • We saw them with the devil!
  • McCarthyism
  • The communists are infiltrating!
  • Abigail and Betty's blind accusations of witchcraft in the community parallel McCarthy and Kazan's blind accusations of Communism in America.
  • Parallel
  • Abigail and Betty begin to call out random names, accusing them of witchcraft and saying they had been seen with the devil. These blind accusations of witchcraft cause the people accused to be automatically arrested and tried as witches  (Miller 48).
  • The Crucible
  • Let either of you breathe a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.
  • Joseph McCarthy and Eli Kazan made many accusations of communism. McCarthy didn't specify any names, simply saying, "...more than two hundred 'card-carrying' communists had infiltrated the United States government" (American Masters). Kazan threw out eight names, including his own, saying they were all apart of the American Communist Party (Amerian Masters).
  • McCarthyism
  • Communists have infiltrated the United States government!
  • Abigail's character is a parallel of McCarthy.
  • Characters
  • Abigail accused many people of witchcraft, and very few people spoke out against her because they feared her and what she was capable of (Miller 20).
  • McCarthy accused many people of communism, and for a while, people refused to question him and speak out against him, because they feared him and was very intimidating with his accusations (History.com, Joseph R. McCarthy).
