  • To Cicones
  • Odysseus Finds a Cave
  • "But now cloud-gathering zeus sent the north winds against our ships in a fierce tempest, and covered with his clouds both land and sea; night broke from heaven. The ships drove headlong on ward, their sail torn into tatters by the fury of the wind" pg.81 of The Odyssey.
  • Cyclops Return
  • Odysseus and his men were washed up on the shore of the land of the Cyclops. Here they made a meal of wild goats.
  • Confrontation With Cyclops
  • After their meal of the goats they crossed the mainland where they immediately found a cave. This cave was full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese. When they saw this Odysseus grabbed some food and got out of there, but....
  • Odysseus and Men Escape
  • The inhabitant of the cave, the Cyclops Polyphemus, soon returned before Odysseus and his men could leave. At first he is very welcoming to the men, but that soon turns to hostility when he eats two of Odysseus's men. He then imprisoned the other men.
  • "I snatched it from the fire, while my men stood around and Heaven inspired us with great courage. Seizing the olive stake, sharp at the tip, they plunged it in his eye, and I, perched up above, whirled it around." pg.87 of The Odyssey.
  • This scene is important to the overall plot because this is what caused Poseidon's hatred and need for revenge towards Odysseus. What happens in this scene explains why Poseidon does what he does to Odysseus in the present time and scenes.
