  • Pedro leads a wounded man into a quaint room, covered wall to wall with worn but beautiful tapestries and paintings.
  • Climax
  • Lying in the bed, the narrator comes upon a book that describes the paintings that he is surrounded by.
  • Falling Action
  • The candelabrum, not providing enough light, is moved by the narrator so he could read the book more cleary.
  • Resolution
  • As the flickering light illuminates the dark corners that were previously unseen, a portrait of a young woman is reveled.
  • To examine the life like painting with a closer eye, the narrator removes it from the wall, and frantically reads a description of the wonderful peace of art in the book.
  • The woman was having her portrait painted by her husband. Emerged in his art, making every stroke perfect, he fails to notice that the smile the she wore was no longer true. After weeks of work, the masterpiece was done. Proclaiming that his work was life itself he turned suddenly to his beloved - she was dead!
