George is harsh towards Lennie, harsh but with good reason. He treats him pretty rough, not at all they way people treat others with a metal illness now. Lennie tends to get into a lot of trouble which comes back around to George. He makes them get fired so they have to go around from town to town. They are about to start their new job so George tells Lennie to not talk to anyone when he gets there, so he can't get them fired.

Slim's dog had recently had some puppies, he offered to give one to Lennie but George said he couldn't have one because he is too stupid. he can't take care of himself, how could he take care of a puppy? George then explains to Slim how he and Lennie met. George was good friends with Lennie's aunt, who took care of him. When she died George began to take care of Lennie. Lennie walked into the bunkhouse with a puppy under his coat, trying to hide it. George got angry at him and made him return it to its mother. As Lennie returns Carlson begins to complain to Candy about how bad his dog smells and how the dog is so old he's better off dead. The men try to con fence him to shoot the dog but Candy refuses. He later lets the men kill the dog for him. Curly is always looking to get into a fight. Seeing how big Lennie is he wanted to fight him, so he started punching him. Lennie didn't know what to do so he broke Curly's right hand. Curly is taken to a doctor and Lennie is ashamed of himself. He never meant to hurt anyone.
