Storyboard Text

  • We should build a railroad through Nebraska to the west!
  • That's not fair! The Missouri Compromise makes that territory free. The South deserves to have more land equal to the Nebraska territory!
  • 7 Years Later (1861)
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act
  • I support both of you!
  • We could divide the territory into Nebraska and Kansas but on the topic of slavery that is up to the settlers to decide.
  • I guess we could try that.
  • But Congress already passed it......
  • Hey! You can't make the Kansas land slave territory it's above the compromise line!!
  • Unfortunately we no longer have the funds and our nation now has to deal with the threats of southern secession.
  • Now that Kansas has decided to be a free state, we can build the railroad westward!
  • We can fund the railroad! However we do want to build it in a different path.
  • New Republican Party
  • But what about my railroad from Chicago through Nebraska?
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act has helped set a precedent for political policies in terms of popular sovereignty in new western territories. The new Republican Party also was formed during this time and created more divisions between the North and the South in terms of the previous Whig Party. The South felt that they were receiving injustice and threatened to secede from the Union.
