  • The Tariff Debate
  • The Tariff will hurt the southerners too much.
  • This is whats best for the U.S. Since I'm president of the entire U.S., I have to do whats right for the entire country.
  • Southern Rebelion
  • Even president Jackson wants to enforce the tariff.
  • Then we will just have to nullify it.
  • The tariff is too high, and the south will never stand for this.
  • Fine, we will lower the tariff!
  • Jackson says that he sides with the north and that the U.S. should keep the tariff. By done this, he betrayed his party and the south.
  • A Threaten
  • Congress, I need you to pass a law saying that I have the power to enforce the tariff using the army.
  • The southern states passed a law that nullified the tariff. This is how they rebelled against Jackson and the tariff.
  • Now Jackson passed a law that said he has the power to use the army to enforce the tariff!
  • Congress lowered the tariff a lot, but the south still refused to pay it. The demanded no tariff or they will secede.
  • The southerners nullified the force act too!
  • President Jackson asks for a law to be passed that says he has the power to use the military to enforce the tariff. He already has this this power to do this, but he wanted to threaten the southerners. This was the force act.
  • Sure.
  • After Jackson passed the force act, the southern states called his bluff and nullified the act as well.
  • He bluffing, lets just nullify that too.
  • After the southern states nullified the force act, Jackson finally gave up. He couldn't do anything more so he just took off the tariff.
  • Fine, I give up. Just take away the tariff.
