  • The Tariff Debate
  • A very high tariff should be placed on imported goods.
  • Congress
  • I agree, this would encourage citizens to buy American.
  • The South
  • Anger in the South
  • This is an outrage! The government has a bias towards us, this will only help the North!
  • This could end slavery and ruin our economy! We must nullify this law or secede!
  • North vs. South
  • The South
  • We should have the right to nullify this law! President Jackson will surely agree with his party.
  • This tariff is fair and would help America as a whole.
  • The North
  • Congress passes a very high tariff in 1828, that causes a lot of debate.
  • The Decision on the Tariff
  • The federal union should be preserved. It is my job to find that a law is unconstitutional, therefore nullification is unnecessary.
  • Southerner find out about the passed tariff and are outraged by it. They believe that it could end slavery and ruin their society.
  • Anger Towards Jackson
  • John C. Calhoun
  • You have betrayed the democrat party, when we needed you. I do not want to work alongside a traitor! I am resigning from office.
  • Andrew Jackson
  • The Northerners believed that the tariff would be beneficial and help America overall. However southerner believed it would ruin their trade.
  • The Tariff is lowered
  • The force bill has just been nullified by Southerners. What will we do?
  • Andrew Jackson declares that he does not support nullification on the tariff even though his party does.
  • John C. Calhoun resign from office because he felt betrayed from Jackson's actions.
  • To ensure that people follow this tariff, I will issue a force bill that allows military action to enforce acts of Congress.
  • I have just done what is best for the country.
  • The force bill was unsuccessful, because southern states just nullified it. The high tariff was lowered so much, that it did very little. Overall southerner won the tariff debate.
  • We will have to lower the tariff even more
