Before WW1, countries throughout Europe made mutual defense agreements that meant that if one was attacked, the allies would have to help. The alliances were; Russia and Serbia, Germany and Autria-Hungary, France and Russia, Britain, France, and Belgium, and Japan and Britain.
Africa and Asia were huge areas of competition for Europe because of the raw materials. The desire for larger empires created tension amongst the European countries. Also, much of the origin of the war was because of the Slavic people wanting to separate from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The immediate cause of World War I was the assasisination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. In June 1914, a Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand killed the Archduke.
