  • ADAMS' LAST NIGHT OF PRESIDENCY
  • I cannot believe that Jefferson beat me in the Presidential race. I must appoint people from my own party, like William Marbury to be justice of the peace for the District of Columbia before I run out of time in office.
  • NEXT DAY IN OFFICE WITH PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON AND SECRETARY OF STATE JAMES MADISON.
  • Marbury is going to want his job. He was already told he was going to serve as the justice of peace for the District of Columbia.
  • As the president now, I order you to not turn in any of the commissions that have not yet been delivered.
  • I want my job. I want to be given a Writ of Mandamus, because Judiciary Act of 1789 says that the Supreme Court can issue me one.
  • In the Supreme Court room with Chief Justice John Marshall, William Marbury, and James Madison.
  • The Judiciary Act violates Article lll, Section 2 and is therefore unconstitutional. I cannot give you a Writ of Mandamus.
  • On this day, of 1803, Judicial Review is established by this case.
