Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918 in South Africa. His parents were Gadla and Nosekeni.
When Nelson was seven, he was sent to school, making him the first in his family to go.
In 1930, when Nelson was twelve, his father died and his mother couldn't take care of him anymore so she sent him to a distant relative, Chief of the Thembu people, Jongintaba.
Jongintaba had a son, Justice and a daughter named Nomafu. They were the same age as Nelson.
When Nelson was 21 Jongintaba sent him away to college. He stayed there for four years.
When Nelson got back, Jongintaba arranged a marriage for him so he ran away to Johannesburg, the biggest city in Africa.
