Memory: Billy comes down with a common case of puppy fever. He begs his parents to get one but his parents are very poor and cant afford dogs like the one he wants.
One day Billy finds a magazine that the fishers left behind. In that magazine showed dogs for $25 each. Billy then saves enough money over two years to buy the dogs. He asks his grampa to order them. A few weeks later it says they are only $40 but they will only ship them to the depot of Tahlequah. So Billy without telling his parents went to Tahlequah to get his dogs.
Dogs for sale!! Only $25 each!
Rubbin and Rainie made a bet with Billy saying that he couldn't catch the ghost coon, and said even his dog couldn't do it. They went out and found the coon. Little Ann and Old Dan catch him but Billy decided he doesn't want to kill the coon. Rubbin was so mad that he called his dog the 3 dogs all started to fight. Rubbin was going to kill Billy's dogs so they wouldn't kill his but Billy throws a stick and trips Rubbin. Billy goes over to the dogs and breaks them up. He looks over at Rainie white as a ghost and then looks down at Rubbin. Rubbin tripped an the ax went into his stomach. Rubbin took his last breath that night.
Billy got his dogs and they hunted and hunted. His grandpa told him that there was a competition about who's dog could catch the most coons in one night and another competition on who's dog was the prettiest. Billy one both even though his dogs almost froze to death during a snow storm. After he won he gave the gold cup to his youngest sister and the silver cup to his other sister.

Little Ann was trying to help kill the lion along with Billy, chopping the lion with his ax, eventually killing it. He takes the two hurt dogs home. His mother helped stitch up some of the wounds but it isn't enough for Old Dan. Billy heard Old Dan take his last breath. Little Ann is OK but she wouldn't eat for several days. She uses the last of her strength to get to Old Dan's grave then took her last breathe on his grave.
