Storyboard Text

  • Before school starts, I create my goals, expectations, and procedures.
  • Ms. Shannon's Needs
  • I make a poster for my own needs and then I create unillustrated posters for the various procedures and routines. I also make a teacher mailbox for notes and suggestions from students.
  • Sharpening pencils:
  • Sitting on the Carpet
  • During the first week of school, especially the first day, we will play get-to-know-you games and start learning about the rules and routines of the classroom.
  • We will discuss what students need to succeed in school and then I show them my poster of what I need and I post it up by my desk.
  • Next we will discuss the school's overarching rules (e.g., CWC's 5 Golden Rules) and we will make a web chart of what these rules look like.
  • Finally, we create a classroom agreement, commitments that the students come up with and agree upon. EVERYBODY signs this, even the teacher.
  • Classroom Agreements • • • •
  • We will go over my procedures and routines. Once we have discussed them, I will put the students into pairs or small groups and have them illustrate the small posters I made before school started.
  • The web-chart and classroom agreement will go in a spot that a student suggests and is voted upon by the class. The small procedures posters will go in relevant spots (e.g., the pencil sharpening one by the sharpener).
  • Sharpening pencils:
  • Sitting on the Carpet
  • Practice, practice, practice! For the first few weeks, a great emphasis will be put on rehearsing the routines and procedures and internalizing the rules and agreements. Lots of praise and rewards will be given for following rules and procedures.
  • Wow, I see that every person has their hands by their side, a bubble in their mouth, and is facing forward. That's a Golden Coin for the class! Great job!
