In, The Absolutely True Diary of A Part Time Indian, an important lesson learned is that, relationships with friends and family can make someone doubt themselves at times, but they will ultimately improve who they are and make them a more exceptional person.
Alexie wants us to realize that true friends will stick up for one another in the worst of times even when decisions become morally troubling. This leads to those friends becoming more introspective and decisive people.
"I loved Rowdy for doing that. I felt guilty for loving him for that. But revenge also feels pretty good.(22)"
Alexie wants us to realize that relationships with friends or family will not hold someone back from reaching their goals. Instead, the important people in their lives will always be there for them, even if they're not physically with them.
"Indian families stick together. For good or for bad, we don't leave one another.(89)"
"I wanted to tell him that I thought I was being courageous, and that I was trying to fix my broken friendship with Rowdy, and that I missed him, and if that was gay, then okay, I'm the gayest dude in the world.(103)"
By using this quote, Alexie want us to realize that when there is a strong friendship, like Rowdy and Jr.'s, than it doesn't matter what people think of the people in that friendship. The only thing that matters is that friendship between them is unbreakable.
