  • His World...
  • And Their's
  • His Foes
  • "I ate the white meal, drank the white water, received the white smiles..."(Griffin 124). When his pigmentation that classified him as a Negro wore off, Griffin tried to enjoy the privileges of a white man, but could not distance himself from the severity of the contrast merely because of the color of one's skin.
  • His Defeat...
  • "...when I was a Negro, the whites judged me fit for the junk heap, while the Negros treated me with great warmth"(Griffin 126). Griffin then realizes that while the white man have more economic advantages, a Negro's connection with one another is far better.
  • And Revival
  • WHITES ONLY. NO ALBINOS ALLOWED.
  • "One of them, a heavyset, muscular fellow in khaki and a white sweatshirt whistled at me...'Hey, Baldy,' he called softly"(Griffin 33). During Griffin's six-week ordeal, he gets himself in serious danger. Situations which he would not have been in if he were white.
  • His Realization
  • While in a house stricken by poverty, Griffin realizes the awful reality of the Negro condition. This realization makes him feel like there is no hope for humanity. "I searched for some other answer and found none. I had spent a day without food and water for no other reason than that my skin was black. I was sitting on a tub in the swamp for no other reason"(Griffin 115).
  • "I took a seat beside white men at the counter and the waitress smiled at me. It was a miracle... No one paid me the slightest attention. No one said, 'What're you doing in here, nigger?'"(Griffin 123). When his pigmentation that classified him as a Negro wore off
  • This is how Griffin felt after seeing the sign, "...a large proportion of them understood that I worked as much for them and their children as I did for the Negroes...we might be able to live in mansfield in an atmosphere of peace and understanding after all"(Griffin 155, 156).
