  • Cottage Industry
  • Every day, over and over. It's getting old.
  • Samuel Slater
  • I hope no one from England will hate me after this.
  • Lowell Mills
  • The cottage industry was the time when everyone made their own things like clothing. Everything was made in their own home and if there was something they couldn't make it was traded for.
  • Working Conditions
  • Samuel Slater came from England after secretly memorizing plans for a machine.
  • Loom
  • The Lowell Mills were some of the first factories in the US. They used looms to quickly weave cloth which was made to clothing. It was the first time that women could work and make their own money. The looms were dangerously close together.
  • Effects of the Factory System
  • The conditions in the factories were very dangerous, shuttles would fly off their machines and hit people in the head, hair and dresses would often get caught in the machines and cotton flying all around would be inhaled and suffocate everyone over time.
  • Help!! My dress is caught in the loom!! Please, someone help me!
  • The loom was used to quickly make fabric from cotton. While they were very dangerous, the loom was used a lot and was the basis for binary code.
  • Because of the advances used with the loom, we are now able to go to the store and buy clothing ready made!
