Amelie was heading home from school. She had learned about simple machines in class that day. I Her homework was to find and take pictures of all 6 types. She had already found a pulley. On her way home she saw a barn with a man pulling a rope, which was lifting a hay bale on a fixed pulley.
She had to pick up Fred, her little brother on her way home.
"Fred," Amelie said, "I found a simple machine, a lever, on my way home. Mr. Johansen was digging a hole with a shovel. That is a type of lever!"
"Hey! this door knob is a wheel and axle! When I turn the knob, energy is saved because the rod connected to it is smaller!
"Hey look! A moving van. I wonder... An inclined plane! The ramp is a inclined plane! Those make it easier to move heavy things. I should go ask them if they are willing to have their moving van in my homework!"
Later that day!
"Dad, I learned about simple machines in school today, and I noticed that that screw you are using is, well, a screw! Screws are inclined planes wrapped around a cylinder."
"La di da di da!"
"Mom, I found my last simple machine! A wedge. It is 2 inclined planes together. I am using a knife to cut there potatoes. A knife is a sharp wedge!"
