Socs Vs Greasers.
Ponyboy cannot control the tension between the socs and the greasers because he is not powerful and he would never be able to snap the tension between the socs and the greasers. It impacts Ponyboy because he knows that the fighting will never stop. Because of this Ponyboy realized he had to get tougher throughout the story and he did. For example In the beginning of the story he gets beat up by the socs but by the end of the story he changes and starts to fight and defend himself.
Two-bit was able to help Ponyboy by talking through Ponyboy's hardships with him and caring for him. For example when Ponyboy and Two-bit were at the gas station Two-bit explains to Ponyboy that the only thing that kept Darry from being a soc was him and soda. This means that Two-bit understands Ponyboy's relationship with Darry and can hep ponyboy.
Darry definitely challenged ponyboy in The outsiders. For example when Ponyboy came late Darry walked up to him and punched him rly hard. Darry did this because he cares about Ponyboy and doesn't him want to get into trouble. This challenges Ponyboy to try as hard as he can to not get into trouble and be aware of his surrounding. Ponyboy is able to grow from this as he gets older and realizes that he doesn't want to be punished by Darry.
