Ponyboy trusts Johnny the most out of all the greasers and maybe even his brothers. Ponyboy is really close friends with Johnny and Johnny makes things better for Ponyboy. Ponyboy and Johnny have a better relationship and get to know each other better while they hideout in the church, because there's not anyone else so they become better friends. Johnny saved Ponyboy's life and that shows that Johnny is his friend and really cares about him.
The fire made Ponyboy feel better about himself because he saved kids who would've died in the fire. This was challenging for Ponyboy because he had to run into a church going down in flames, save several children and run out. This experience helped Ponyboy grow as a person and raised his self-esteem because he feels important that he just saved kids lives. Ponyboy feels threatened by the fire because it can take his life.

Dallas challenges Ponyboy because Dallas is the toughest greaser and he challenges Ponyboy as a greaser. Dallas helps Ponyboy like when he gave Johnny and Ponyboy a gun, fifty dollars, and he tells them to hideout in a church after Johnny killed Bob. Ponyboy has gotten tougher because of Dallas and that's how their relationship has changed.
