Men were frequently hung for their actions, and the other inmates were forced to watch. The dead bodies were later cooked into that night's soup.

The Jews were forced to walk long distances in the snow and freezing cold. Many of them died because of the harsh conditions, but many others were shot by Officers because they fell behind in line. This was later known as the Death March.
After Elie escaped from the holocaust, he ironically got food poisoning, and was hospitalized. In the hospital, he saw his-self for the first time in a mirror since the start of the holocaust. He did not recognize his-self.
