Storyboard Text

  • Hello, I'm Knick the Knightof Knowledge.  I bet you said my name wrong.  It's fine, it happens all the time.
  • Let's stuart with John Hoge's article about Small Projects of the New Social Studies
  • Small Projects of the New Social Studies
  • Probably the most important part of this article is how these projects show that the NSS was not just an isolated project or two, but a whole curiculum movement.  However, because of implementation issues, they didn't have the impact it should have.  However, we can still look at them for inspiration
  • Small Projects of the New Social Studies
  • The article is pretty straight forward, discussing the less-cited smaller projects that were part of the NSS. There is a similar trend towards inquiry, student-centered learning that focuses on motivation, and inclusion of minority groups.
  • Lies My Teacher Still Tells by Gloria Ladson-Billings
  • The Billings article is short, but important.  It points out an issue with the NCSS, namely that it doesn't live up to the social justice teachings it professes.  Despite its social justice goals, the NCSS isn't as diverse and open as we might expect and resists change.  This caused Dr. Billings to leave the organization. What reasons could there be for the NCSS to have become so calcified, would you say?
  • And now we should address the Karl Marx in the room...
  • "I Participate, You Participate, We Participate ... They Profit," Notes on Revolutionary Educational Activism to Transcend Capital: The Rouge Forum
  • What, I'm just getting coffee!  You elitist types are all the same, trying to keep the little guy down!  You're so bourgoisie your ass actually shines!
  • I have a question for my readers, though.  Why do Gibson and his collegues consider "citizenship education" to be a bad thing, and what does this say about the NCSS?
  • "I Participate, You Participate, We Participate ... They Profit," Notes on Revolutionary Educational Activism to Transcend Capital: The Rouge Forum
  • Anyway, the Gibson et al article about the Rouge Forum makes for, shall we say, an interesting read?  Although there are a few good criticisms about our current system of education, it is filled with overgeneralizations, exaggerations, conspiracy theories, and other communist philosophy that only takes about two seconds to debunk.
  • DRAMA QUEEN!!!
