  • Hi Sean. How was the milkshake?
  • Mom, I don't want anything for dinner. I can't even keep down sips of gatorade. I need to go to bed because I'm exhausted. I can't do that because I have non-stop diarrhea and stomach pain.
  • Sounds like you need to see a doctor.
  • I suspect that you have Cholera. It is an infectious disease found in certain regions of the world, including Puerto Rico. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a gram-negative, curved or comma-shaped rod bacterium called Vibrio Cholera. It is usually transmitted to people or animals through contaminated water sources. Contamination comes from fecal material from those that are infected. Bison, cattle, and dogs are the animals most affected by this bacteria but they don’t develop illness like humans. Dogs can get very ill if exposed to enough bacteria in their food or water.

  • Symptoms of Cholera can be seen as early as a few hours or up to 4 days after infection. Mild symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pain. It can also be very serious causing shock or death.
  • Sean, the life cycle of Cholera is that humans and animals ingest water or food contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio Cholera. They excrete it in their feces that contaminates food or water that is consumed by animals and humans. Then the process starts all over again.
  • It makes me worry about eating out.
