The Story of Andrew Jackson BY: Sean Lutz P.3A
Andrew Jackson became President in 1828, becoming the first Western President. His election was full of mudslinging with Henry Clay, which means they were attacking each others character.
Henry Clay ran against Jackson in 1828, and they had differences about the National Bank, and States vs. National sovereignty (rights).
Jackson blamed all the mudslinging during his election, as the cause of his wife's death. Rachel Jackson was his wife, and he missed her very much throughout his Presidency.
Once Jackson became President, he started using the Spoils System, which pretty much just gave his friends and supporters jobs in the government.
During almost the first two years of Jackson's Presidency, he was forced to focus on Peggy Eaton. It had became known that she started to date John Eaton, who she would later marry, while she still had a husband. Many of the wives of other cabinet members completely shut out Peggy.
