Storyboard Text

  • What to do with Slaves
  • "I do not believe that anyone has the right to own each other and I want to end SLAVERY."
  • Please let me be free
  • "Why would you want to do that? Slaves in the south benefit our economy, and they are just property."
  • Preventing the Civil War
  • "All new states entered into the U.S. should be admitted as a Slave or Free state based on the 36 30 parallel."
  • Let's make a compromise.
  • "States should be allowed to decide whether they are Slave or Free themselves! "
  • Nullification Crisis
  • We, the people of South Carolina, wish to secede from the Union because of high tariffs and not enough states rights.
  • During the Antebellum period many people had different beliefs about slavery . The South wanted to have slaves to do their work while the North didn't have any economical need for slaves and could let them be free. This caused a major division between the North and the South which led to violence.
  • Tensions in the Country
  • I should be a free man, because my master took us to a free state and then he died.
  • You are a slave, slaves are property and cannot sue his master. You will remain a slave.
  • One of the causes of the Civil war was States rights, and how to determine if states were free or slave. The South wanted states to decide for themselves whether they were free or slave while the North wanted to have a line to decide. The Kansas Nebraska act made it so that states had to vote for whether they were slave or free.
  • The election of 1860
  • I, Abraham Lincoln, will take office as the president of the United States of America.
  • The South and myself refuse to have this man as our president!
  • Many of the states in the South did not agree on high tariffs. In the North tariffs were acceptable so that citizens bought the North's goods. Over time South Carolina wanted to secede, but compromises and threats were created to keep them in the Union.
  • Secession of Georgia
  • I believe that we should not secede from the Union but, they have no right to take away our ways and slaves.
  • Before the civil war started there was a very controversial court case (in the supreme court) that decided that slaves didn't have rights as property. Also, the Judges decided that it was unconstitutional to outlaw slavery in a state unless it was voted on my the citizens.

  • Many of the Southern states decided to secede because they did not like Abraham Lincoln. They believed that Abraham would destroy Southern culture and get rid of all of their slaves.
  • Alaxander Stephens became the Vice President of the Confederate states. He did not believe in seceding but he didn't want the Union to take away states rights. He was chosen to be a leader because of his past political background. Most people in GA decided to secede so they did.
