Old Yeller Fred Gipson Project by: Selia Werth
Exposition Texas, 1860, and fourteen-year-old Travis, his younger brother Arliss, five, and Mama. Papa is away and won't be returning in a few months. Papa put Travis in charge while he is gone.
Why can't I have a lizzard?
Arliss, like I said before, no!
Rising Action Mama sends Travis to go kill a deer for meat. Travis uses the skills his father taught him to shoot a doe in the heart. Meanwhile, a dog has showed up at the house, curled up in a ball, and with a stub tail and a half-chewed ear. Travis is forced to keep the dog because Mama said so. Travis hangs the deer in the dog run. It is easy to get to, and if the stray dog, Old Yeller, can eat it maybe Mama will think about not keeping it.
Climax When Old Yeller fights a wolf that has hydrophobia, it bites Old Yeller causing him to get hydrophobia. Hydrophobia can be dangerous to the family and Travis has no option, but to shoot Old Yeller. They have to help stop the spread of hydrophobia. Travis could barely stand to kill him because he was so attached.
Falling Action Papa finally comes home after a few months . Travis is pleased to find what he asked for, before his father left, a horse. Although Travis is still heartbroken from having to kill Old Yeller, a horse would never replace him, but could possibly close to it.
Conclusion The speckled pup steals cornbread off the table, and that reminds Travis of when Old Yeller stole the deer meat. Travis now accepts the new puppy into the family, and thinks of what he could do with the pup.
