FERDINAND AND JUAN SAIL THE WORLD
Written by: Serena Wen
Hi! I'm Ferdinand.
Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Elcano were both sailors
Hello! My name is Juan.
Ferdinand and Juan shared a goal to be the first to sail around the entire world. So in September 1519, they set sail from Portugal with a crew of sailors and five ships.
I'll go check on the crew first.
I'll be captain and steer the ship while you keep track of where we are.
They sailed to Patagonia on the East Side of South America. While they were there, some sailors were unhappy and one of the ships was lost.
Ferdinand, Juan, and their four ships sailed for a month through a stormy narrow waterway. A group of sailors got scared and took a ship to sail back home.
This is too dangerous! We're going back home!
The three remaining ships finally made it to a safe calm ocean. It was so nice compared to the storms, Ferdinand named it the Pacific after the word pacifo, which meant peaceful in Spanish.
This ocean is so calm and peacful! Let's call it the Pacific Ocean.
